Hypercolour offshoot Losing Suki continues to be a breeding ground for new talent. Following on from the likes of Kamo and Jack Dixon, this time out it’s Leeds talent Last Magpie who gets put in the shop window with a fresh house/bass four tracker. Despite already finding acclaim with another moniker, Last Magpie is a new project exploring a different aesthetic: “I love house, garage and dub so I like to play about with them sounds and create atmosphere and deep sub movement” says the man himself. He must be doing something right, because already tracks off this EP have been played by Skream and licenced by Maja Jane Coles to her forthcoming DJ Kicks mix... The EP starts with ‘No More Stories’– a jostling arrangement of metallic percussion and punchy left-right bass jabs that really keep you on your toes. As things evolve, swirling Hot Flush pads and an aqueous underwater vibe permeate from start to finish whilst an icy garage vocal tugs at the heartstrings above. ‘Leeds Syndrome’ is immediately more housey, with rolling kicks, hats and shimmering keys all hanging in large, open and echoey spaces. Next up, ‘U See’ is a big cloud of swirling harmonics in which glistening tambourines and muted chords trills ring out. When the rubberised bass notes kick in, the thing gets mobile and skips along a nice loose path littered with watery drips and vocal coos. It’s feel good, for sure, but digital purchasers will feel even better, for they get bonus cut ‘Get You Thinking’ which is a hollowed out garage shuffler that goes deep whilst retaining a brushed-metal feel a la Julio Bashmore. Clearly influenced by dub culture and bad-boy bottom ends, Last Magpie covers plenty of ground on this EP, all of it worth hearing!
