Harold Matthews Jr and DJ Fill – Pause feat. Syl Messi

Debuted on Harold Matthews Jr impeccable ‘Peripheral Vision’ LP sampler, ‘Pause’ is brimming with soul but set against a Hip Hop-meet-Broken Beat vibe and peppered with smooth Rhodes, niggly electronic arps and a bassline that ain’t letting you go. Chicago’s Harold and Syl Messi go head-to-head with the lyrics, bringing together a smooth and edgy vocal balance for something truly special and unique.

Chicago-based Harold wrote his first releases in the early 90’s with legends like Ron Trent, Terry Hunter, Maurice Joshua and Ron Carroll, with songs like ‘Ritual Of Love’ and Barbara Tucker’s ‘I Get Lifted’. Throughout the late 90’s he was well known under his Blak Beat Niks moniker with production partner K. Fingers and their releases on PAN Records. He had outings on the mighty Large Music, and his own label Melodious Fonk. Further projects followed with Slip N Slide, Mark Knight, Peppermint Jam, Glenn Underground, Makin’ Moves and Sean McCabe.

The original version is produced by our uber-talented close friend from Cardiff, DJ Fill (aka Phil Evans), who sadly passed away in March 2022. Over the years, Phil has produced and remixed under the Southern Divide moniker (alongside Justin Stride and Deli-G), for an impressive collection of credible artists and record labels such as Roland Clark, Randy Muller, Linda Clifford, Sabrynah Pope, Soulfuric, Mountain Records, Fluential, West End Records, Catch 22 among others. We’re absolutely honoured to be including his last production on this project.

We’re also stoked to bring one of the true innovators of the broken beat sound to the label too with the mighty Kaidi Tatham taking on remix duties. Picking up the tempo a little and weaving in his unmistakable craftsmanship from the off, it’s a real summer time inspired jam that takes the groove into a whole other musical journey.
