Following the release of the analogue electronics of the 'IMAN EP' this Spring, Freddy Fresh drops a new EP that further showcases his diverse musical talent. This time enlisting the vocal talents of Earth to Jordi, ‘Candyland’ sees Freddy’s dirty house bassline get lifted by a joyous and soulful vocal from the multi-dimensional artist.
To say the Minneapolis born and based Freddy Fresh has history is a somewhat understatement. His first studio recording was released on Boogie Down Productions, with Fresh remixing a track for 'The Man & His Music Dedication' album for Scott La Rock & KRS- One, and he has since recorded for over 100 independent record labels, including major labels Sony UK, Virgin, BMG UK and Harthouse Germany and is also founder of the record labels Howlin' Records, Electric Music Foundation, Analog, and Sockett.
Jordiana (Earth to Jordi) is a gender expanding, multidimensional artist and guide, weaving healing energy into all of their practices. Their performance art work has been welcomed at the Getty Center and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity expanding from her 20+ year background in Theatre and Entertainment Industries. Informed by her individual self-healing practices, Jordi has been able to guide group care workshops centered around meditation, ritual, herbalogy, and decolonial organizing for the liberation of marginalized groups of people.
Of their Candyland collaboration, Freddy recalls, “I was in a mood to make something to dance to when I started Candyland. I initially wanted to keep adding elements to make the track grow and evolve, but as luck would have it nothing seemed to “add” to the track, meantime the groove was playing over and over and I started to feel sort of hypnotized by the groove and it put me in a dreamlike state, it was around this time that at around 1:03 into the track that I decided to add some chord progressions that appeared to carry the track into an even more dreamy style vibe, inspired by this I thought let’s put some cool modular electronic sounds into the track, so at around 1:37 I added those bits, It has always intrigued me how music and visual art transports the viewer, listener to another realm. Music is (to me at least) therapeutic. Candyland not only gives me a sense of calm but also managed to make me nod my head to the repetitive beat as well. Imagine my surprise when my manager and lifelong pal, Oliver Way, discovered a talented vocalist, Jordi, to sing along with my song, it really took off after that...”
For Jordi, “it was a very spontaneous process that brought out a sultry soulful sound I was glad to be able to explore. I'm thankful to have worked on ‘Candyland’ and am excited for Freddy Fresh's new sonic release!”
‘Candyland’ is backed by the dark and dubby electronic workout of ‘Oyster’ and is a pre-cursor to Freddy Fresh’s forthcoming new studio album ’35 Years of Music’, set for release on 29 September.
