As a youth roaming the streets of New York City in the early 90s, Chaka Kenn was immersed in hiphop culture; as a breakdancer, graffiti artist, mix tape DJ and clothing designer, one of Chaka's first full time jobs was spearheading the guerilla street team for the uber hot clothing / lifestyle brand 555 Soul. Handing out flyers outside of showcases at private venues and nightclubs, dropping flyers at boutiques, record stores and salons around the 5 boroughs, slapping stickers all over the Big Apple all quickly led to bigger opportunities within the high paced world of street marketing; as his network grew so did his client list; soon Chaka was handling guerilla marketing / street distribution for URB Magazine, Jive Records, Bad Boy Records, Rawkus Records, Flyer Magazine, VIP Magazine as well as the top nightclubs and event promoters in and around Manhattan. This grind naturally progressed into Chaka putting together his own showcases at clubs like Limelight, Wetlands and CBGBs, with artists from a number of genres ranging from Gang Starr, Mobb Deep and the Beastie Boys, to Deee-Lite, Paul Oakenfold and Rupaul. This was an era when all genres were played during a regular night out at the club as things weren't so segregated musically, when DJs had the ability to span genres seamlessly and take the crowd on an unforgettable musical journey. This is the foundation on which Chaka has built his production techniques, and these are the values that shine through in his music and DJ sets. The Breakdadawn EP is a 3 track collection of jams dedicated to and inspired by De La Soul, a group that has been ever present throughout Chaka's career. Sit back and let the music wash over you like a warm breeze... you're in Chaka's house now.
