I knew we would come together again, despite the fact that I lived in Sweden and he remained in my beloved Manhattan. Together we had created some beautiful music in the good ol' days. And we had been rewarded for our collaborations; not only with gold dust but with misadventure and spice.
I call him Ramjet but his real name is Ron Rogers. We met in the Bronx a long long long time ago. We formed a band when we were younger than springtime. We called the group THE AIR BUBBLES. Ron played the drums and I played the bass. We shared the vocals. We grew up, moved to Manhattan (oh that crazy island), wrote songs, produced bands, opened rehearsal studios, started production companies, hung out all day and all night in recording studios, collected royalties (BMI, ASCAP) and most importantly ... lived the dream! Or should I say we embodied the dream! To be sure.
And then one day, just like that, we went our separate ways. I fell in love with Europe and disappeared from the Big Apple. But we never lost touch with each other. We were in synch. We were brothers. Music had cemented our relationship for eternity.
In the merry month of May, 2013 whilst relaxing in my hammock, out from my garden speakers my Grooveshark playlist sent me a wondrous tune called OTHER GUYS. This was a song
that Ron Rogers wrote for a band I produced in 1983 called Elbow Bones and the Racketeers (no joke)! What a gift to bestow upon me on such a glorious unseasonably warm day in the idyllic Swedish countryside. Thank you Lady Destiny, you're such a clever dame.
OTHER GUYS: it has always been one of my favorite Ron Rogers compositions. I marvelled at the arrangement, the passionate drums, the vocal (the inimitable Haitia Fuller), the lyrics (the Swiss Miss herself, Adriana Kaegi), the sentiment (wow! really?), the sex of it ... What a work of art!
When the song finished I eagerly tumbled out of the hammock (it's the only real way to leave a hammock, right?) onto the grass. I made up my mind then and there to contact my Bronx Bomber buddy and see what he was up to. It had been a while since we spoke. My ulterior motive, of course, was to find another OTHER GUYS. And so I skyped him (because that's what you do when you live 3500 miles away from each other). The conversation started with my "Hey, my brother, let's hook up and do what we do best. Let's get back in the lab!" And it ended with Ron's "I'm in!"
Ron was on it like rice on beans. All over it. Within 4 days of that skype session he delivered to me the basic track which would become RAT PACK. We were both huge fans of Sinatra and Dean and Sammy so this was no chore at all. This was a love thang; an exercise in pay-back; a poetic thank you to the guys who left indelible prints on our personalities and spirits and musical landscapes.
Yes, we did it again. Ron's signature has always been his infectious dance groove (can anyone on earth not dance to DEPUTY OF LOVE?) Here he delights in making you tap your toes (all of them) once again.
I am very pleased that Fate brought us together again.
And I'm more than pleased with the results of this latest collaboration. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it all together.
