Twirl Recordings
twirl001 | 2014-10-13
Shaun J. Wright & Alinka launched the Twirl brand in 2013 as a series of parties in Chicago where they reside. Meeting the previous year, the pair bonded over their love for authentic house music, which subsequently led to a string of collaborative material surfacing via the likes of Derrick Carter & Luke Solomon’s Classic Music Company, and the iconic Tribal Records imprint. 2014 sees Twirl take the step from event to record label, kicking off with material from the label founders and enlisting two acclaimed artists, and associates to launch the imprint, namely Kim Ann Foxman (Jackathon/Needwant) and Australian duo Stereogamous (Tribal/EMI).

The original mix of ‘Journey Into The Deep’ is up first, embodying the raw and veritable house sound their home turf is known for, Wright’s vocals, notably known for featuring on Hercules & Love Affair material, lend a helping hand to creating the infectious vibe of the composition, while the crunchy drum sounds, stuttering arpeggio’s and rumbling subs round off the track as a hypnotic heavy hitter.

Kim Ann Foxman steps up on remix duties next, coming off her hit EP for Heidi's imprint Jackathon, the Maya Jane Coles collaborator and remixer of The XX reshapes ‘Journey Into The Deep’ into a bass heavy acidic workout, skilfully fusing swinging rhythms, cosseting string melodies, snippets from the original vocal lines and squelchy acid licks into an ever-blooming interpretation.

Then last up to close the package is the Stereogamous take on ‘Journey Into The Deep’, the duo strip things back to a raw percussion and bass-led state, bringing distorted drum sounds to the forefront, while roulading square wave bass and glitching synth sounds add an understated, psychedelic to feel the record.
