Part of the new breed of hungry young producers, Anthony Yarranton's star has risen rapidly since first hitting virtual shelves in 2010, now finding itself aligned to Proton Music in the shape of the expressive "Soul Tax" EP.

Operating out of the London capital, UK born Yarranton has been a on the lips of those in the musical know since his debut, "Bedlam", found its way on to both Baroque and Armada. Supported by the DJ colossi of Cattaneo and Oakenfold, the track proved merely an opening gambit in a successful and prolific career. Further melodic triumphs hit the Baroque catalogue with Yarranton's penchant for "deep vibrating bass lines, energetic grooves and subtle melodies". Just shy of a century of production credits thus sit proudly next to the Londoner's name with Axon, Lowbit and Bonzai Progressive becoming a popular proving ground for Yarranton's burgeoning talent.

Starting his Proton career on sibling imprint Particles, it was "Bag of Bells" that further demonstrated Yarranton's ear for rhythm and melody as part of the "Summer Particles 2013" compilation. A resultant bestseller for the label, the track went on to receive its own release courtesy of a trio of remixes from Lateral Cut Groove, Danny Lloyd and Kacper Kostecki. An upcoming rework of Tim Penner's "Ride Til Dawn" marks a debut remix for Proton Music while the "Soul Tax" EP now marks Anthony Yarranton's solo with his thematic five-track offering that combines both up-tempo house flavours and downtempo contemplation in a deeper style that focuses on rhythmic evolution.

Opening track "Happens To Be" provides a rich, warm house sound that builds hypnotically across its eight minute journey. Crisp claps and subtle percussive touches blend with a gently pulsating hypnotic pad that, anchored by a deep kick, ties the track together with an invisible thread.

Title track, "Soul Tax", keeps the deeper house style very much in tact. A strong rhythmic groove is immediately felt as clave percussion taps out a hook that plays its part in laying the foundations for smooth pads to undulate and drift with the occasional vocal sample providing an extra layer of intrigue, echoing and reverberating into the distance.

The deep house predisposition inherent in "Lava Lamps" immediately becomes apparent as a deep bass creates a delicious groove combined with house beats and seductive stabs that delight in soft delays. Deep house chord progressions add to the overall flavour as Chicago house vocal cuts further lend an air of authenticity and fascination.

"Marrakech" evokes images of tropical climes with its birdsong and Northern African instrumentation before "Black Dress" joins the party with similar foundations to its predecessor. This time combined with a fluid yet elegant 2-step rhythm, it provides the perfect percussive backdrop to breathy pads, soft vocal cut and subtle melody.

A quintet of tracks that mark Anthony Yarranton's debut solo EP demonstrate that a "Soul Tax" is definitely a price worth paying.
