If you’re running huge parties on a monthly basis in London and DJing at festivals all over the UK and Europe, then eventually you’re going to start releasing music that works the dance floor and caters for the discerning ears. Following the success of their first two releases (Krankbrother and Jody Barr, respectively), Krankbrother return with more fresh talent in the form of Joe Munday. ‘Ama’s House’ opens the EP with some gentle, live percussion and off beat vocal chants (taken from possession ceremonies in Ghana, and recorded by Munday himself) that keep the track locked into a subtle groove, jazzy keys and crunching synths adding the sparkle here. On the remix, Mark E (Futureboogie/Running Back/Spectral Sound) twists the original and drags it into the disco for a warped, boogie down re-take. Glacial synths and elephantine bass build a wall of sound for the delicate keys to glide around, superb work from the Birmingham based artist.‘Step Sister’ has Munday on a percussive exploration once again, with spoken word, intricate drum arrangement and jazzy stabs, flowering spectacularly with a lead saxophone melody. Its subtle melody line and inspiring production really shine though on this great uplifting cut.

The dark arts of sampling are showcased superbly on EP closer, the fantastically titled ‘Akan Metal Animals, Breathing’, the live drums taken from field recordings in Ghana, recorded by Munday whilst working on an art-house film titled ‘lettres du voyant’, a tale of money, magic and the internet. A deadly combination of pacey percussion, metallic noise and ambient effects, the sum of the parts fill the audio spectrum and tears through the speakers in a track that follows no-one but most certainly delivers a unique sound and style that will find us in eager expectation for Munday’s next musical endeavors….
