Chiwoniso Maraire recorded this stripped down all accoustic version of the traditional song Zvichapera (popularised by the great Thomas Mapfumo) few weeks before she died, at the age of 37. The recording was pure magic: Chiwoniso and her fellow musician Jacob Mafuleni overdubbing lines of mbiras, vocals and hosho in quick takes and intense emotion. The news of her death, so young, a some weeks later took everyone by surprise putting all who knew her and her work in deep sadness. Daughter of the Mbira legend Dumisani Maraire, Chiwoniso, affectionately known as « Chi », the Mbira Queen was one of the most talented artist from Zimbabwe, the internationnally known « voice » of the Shona culture, and a music inspiration for many. This first release of Nyami Nyami records is a tribute to her artistry and humanity.
