Tessier-Ashpool is Riley Gein's love letter to hacker culture and the Cyberpunk future created by William Gibson. The 3 track EP explores Riley's internal soundtrack as he hacks into a computer network. Each track on the EP is a sonic snapshot of each phase in Riley Gein's journey through cyberspace. Energetic and driven grooves are accompanied by cold mechanical atmospheres, blending the unforgiving relentlessness of technology with the frantic thoughts of a hacker attempting to evade the security systems of a secure network.
Daemon details an encounter with a security daemon on the network which notices Riley Gein and begins to hunt him down. Anxiety quickly builds in the track when the melody is introduced, foreshadowing the tension of the break in which Riley knows he's been spotted and must react quickly or else his mission will be compromised. Download ends without any clear resolution to the chase leaving the listener instead with the sound of the security daemon echoing.
Gibson finds Riley Gein having escaped the security daemon and face to face with the target of his mission, a Gibson supercomputer. The hypnotic acid bass line is underpinned by a foreboding drone which becomes the focal point during a brief moment of relaxation before the track crescendos into a washed out wall of sound and explodes back into full force. A minimal drum groove acts as the foundation to Gibson and allows the melodic elements to shine through. Gibson is a track to close your eyes and get lost to as the psychedelic acid bass takes you on a journey.
Download finishes off the EP and provides listeners with a sense euphoria. His mission complete, Riley Gein begins to exfiltrate the data stolen from Gibson and revels in the bliss of another job successfully finished. Angelic droning pads provide the bedrock for this hard hitting track and play against the aggressive kick drum. Beginning with a moment of bliss as the pads swell, the track gives way to a robotic drum groove and high hats which morph into klaxon-like buzzes with no warning. Download showcases Riley Gein's creative pull towards combining mechanical harshness with soft, ethereal, human-like elements to create music that expresses his view of the dystopian transhuman future we are at the precipice of experiencing.
