PuzzleProjectsMusic continues its unorthodox journey in dance music with the strong diversification of its discography. The label's rapid growth, particularly in the last 18 months, has deliberately been by not following trends, whilst championing experimental and dancefloor-ready jams.
The latest release - designed for crazy and hazy afterhours, is the lovechild of label head Ben Spalding and Japanese Artist LeftHandSoundSystem AKA Ken Aoki. The pair started these creations back in 2021. After some time away from the arrangements, the EP rapidly came together in recent months.
Ken and Ben have boldly indulged their penchant for the leftfield, odd sounds, and unusual samples to create two distinct cuts that wildly blur the lines between minimal, electronica and tech house music.
'SWEET LIES' kicks off the EP - the track, strongly inspired by a real-life traumatic life situation teases in expertly through its throbbing funk-infused b-line, along with a range of percussive elements that feel as though they've been played live. A soulful, haunting vocal floats in and out, while hypnotic elements pull you into their auditory orbit. The breakdown introduces a thought-provoking woozy spoken-word dialogue featuring two legends in deep, meaningful talk. This extended breakdown adds to the track's mesmerising appeal and leads us into the latter part of the track, which continues to unleash that ultra-Funkadelic bassline.
On the flip, 'ANIMAL' - specifically designed to be a slow, winding, sleazy after-hours set opener, creeps in with crunchy kicks and hats, ushering us in via a powerful bassline with a sensual female vocal sample via long-term French collaborator of Ben's Marie Berson, who orders us to 'Get to the dirty groove. the filthy, dirty groove' - further female and male vocal clips come via British vocalist Megan Laura.
Unsurprisingly, the low end is exactly that, taking us into the depths of deep, subterranean frequency. The duo utilises the weird-and-wonderful arrangement to introduce segues, warped samples and vocal clips from Ben - making this a mind-melting composition.
