Meanwhile Horizons
MWH014 | 2023-10-13
A unique series that continues to grow in prominence with each successive release, Meanwhile Horizons returns to its "Beyond the Horizon" series with a third instalment. As such, a sextet of tracks from the progressive house industry's finest established and nubreed artists create an EP of glowing melodic beauty and powerful rhythmic force.

Opening proceedings, Atar provides a sparkling moment of elegance with "Unburn". Through heavy beat and mesmerising percussive verve, a powerful sustained bassline is juxtaposed against light swirling motifs that create an evocative soundscape over its 7-minute duration. UK producer, Fabreeka continues the strong rhythmic character with "Amaya". A meticulously programmed percussive groove is anchored by a deep resonant kick and popping woodblock accent before a free-flowing glassy synth lead draws parallels with Sasha's "Airdrawndagger" period. Drifting enticingly, Fabreeka's track is one of subtle elegance and rhythmic prowess.

A regular on Clinique Recordings, Shambhala Music and Univack, Dofamine returns to Meanwhile Horizons after the success of his "Veresk / Yoke" EP with Jiminy Hop. "Squall" is a typically impressive offering that revels in a memorable sonic arrangement and earworm motif that blends impeccably with an array of textured pads. Building throughout the post-breakdown third movement, it is the epitome of modern progressive house and evolving soundscapes. Sri Lankan-based pair, Dimuth K and SAJAY need little introduction with their impressive production credentials and a host of credits on the likes of Juicebox Music, Mango Alley and Proton Music. After a couple of appearances on sister-label Meanwhile, Dimuth K joins with SAJAY to create a deep and sensual offering with "Dharma Bums". Driven by a strong beat and ticking percussion, a metronomic 16th synth note creates a foundation for complementary layers of sound and a shimmering chord progression to make their presence felt. The result is a typically effervescent piece of music.

Dave Leck has been a pre-eminent figure and regular on Nick Lewis' Emotional Content Recordings with further work for Particles, 3rd Avenue and Soundteller highlighting the Australian's distinctive sound. Making a Meanwhile Horizons debut, "Nomadic" is a beautifully constructed track that bristles with melodic verve and dancefloor know-how. Rising and falling in undulating patterns, eddying synth phrases glisten in muted patterns before hitting an open-filtered zenith at the mid-point, perfectly cadenced against a dynamic rhythmic backdrop. The final track sees, GMJ himself reprise his QIAM alter-ego with "Behind the Within". Typically magisterial in execution, an array of perfectly sculpted textures and deep bassline presence interact with each other in inspiring fashion. Delay-infused sequences and white-noise fills vie with a growing synth phrase to create a soundtrack full of gravitas and filmic quality.

With a third instalment marking a welcome return of their sparking series, six stars create a bright new constellation over the horizon.
