An artist with a rich and varied musical portfolio to his name, MUUI makes a very welcome debut on Meanwhile Horizons for the label's 15th release as he delivers "Mindstem / Visave Visave / Before You Were Gone".
Responsible for more than 500 production credits stretching back over a decade, a debut on Eelke Kleijn's Outside The Box Music in early 2013 has seen MUUI go on to release on such esteemed imprints as Sudbeat Music, microCastle and Yoshitoshi Recordings. Furthermore, MUUI has achieved considerable success with his Here Now. label which has been a long-standing vehicle for his own music, accounting for over 300 production credits since a December 2016 debut.
Now making his first appearance on Meanwhile Horizons, the EP opens with the deep, smooth tones of "Mindstem". Dropping straight into a powerful groove of bassline, flowing percussion and hefty kick, an atmospheric chord progression revolves hypnotically in evolving patterns. Subtly effected vocal phrases add to the shifting aural landscape as a filtered arpeggio gradually increases in intensity. Pausing for breath, a gradually stripped-back breakdown creates a beatless moment before the powerful and hypnotic groove drops back into play to close out the second half.
Redolent in rich synth phrasing and lightly jostling motifs, "Visave Visave" gently develops over a near 10-minte timeframe. Full of poise, grace and gorgeous atmosphere, a sumptuous cast of characters interact with each other in easy fashion as arpeggios, pads and looped motifs create wonderful sonic picture. Dropping out rolling rhythmic elements with exquisite dancefloor knowhow, the track is a masterful composition that shines brightly with innovation and impressive production technique.
The EP ends with the equally impressive "Before You Were Gone". Full of emotion, a spine-tingling bassline creates a head-shaking cadence that is the perfect foundation for a sustained chord progression and white-noise infused pads to combine with breathy ethereal sounds. A swathe of complementary melodies ripple and shimmer with ease as MUUI's technique and penchant for powerful and multi-faceted productions perfectly illustrates the reasoning for the Australian born and Berlin-based artist's longevity in the electronic music scene.
